Like many villages in Cilento, Camerota was built inland, away from the coast, because of the Saracen raids that once threatened this part of southern Italy.
For this reason, the old village stands on a rocky spur in a more defensive position, while the coast remained exposed for a long time.
Only later did the seaside settlement develop. Marina di Camerota is in fact a hamlet of Camerota and is much more recent than the historic village.
Today, however, Marina di Camerota is better known than Camerota itself, thanks to its beaches and seaside tourism. Even so, the older village still preserves an important part of the history and identity of the area.
The memory of those difficult centuries survives in the coastal watchtowers and in the old fortifications that can still be seen in the territory.
Visiting Camerota means discovering the older soul of this area, while Marina di Camerota represents its more modern and tourist side.
